Commissioning / Energy Engineer

Based in the heart of downtown Chicago, Sieben Energy Associates is an independent consulting firm specializing in energy efficiency, LEED consulting and commissioning. We provide our clients with comprehensive energy management services. Our diverse team combines significant technical expertise with strategic management know-how to find solutions for our clients’ energy-related issues.

We are expanding our practice and are seeking a commissioning engineer with 2+ years commissioning experience or an engineer with a strong mechanical background and in-depth controls and construction knowledge with 3+ years experience.


Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide commissioning services for new and existing buildings
  • Review and optimize building control systems and EMS performance
  • Analyze mechanical systems
  • Review construction documents
  • Participate in project teams on assignments designed to reduce energy use and demand
  • Interact with client staff and client principals
  • Develop excellent written reports that convey technical information in narrative form
  • Perform comprehensive energy audits to identify and prioritize Energy Conservation Measures (ECM’s); provide cost analysis of ECMs and other energy audit data emphasizing our clients’ return on investment

Technical Skills:

  • Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering degree preferred; other degrees will be considered
  • In-depth understanding of the following systems: HVAC, electrical, building automation/controls and the building construction process
  • Capability to audit existing energy consuming equipment and diagnose problems
  • Experience troubleshooting complex mechanical systems and controls
  • Ability to analyze field data and energy consumption data
  • Thorough understanding of construction drawings and specifications
  • Proficient in performing field work on mechanical systems
  • Capable of compiling financial and statistical analyses
  • Understanding of utility rates and utility billing protocols


Communications Skills: The position requires excellent written and oral abilities to:

  • Maintain relationships with clients
  • Write technical and non-technical reports
  • Give client presentations
  • Write proposals

Business Skills:

  • Self-motivated and able to work in teams
  • Readily offer high-level Client Service, direction and ongoing support
  • Actively work on and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access
  • Ability to succeed in a fast paced entrepreneurial environment

Desirable Credentials/Skills:

  • Commissioning Industry Certification
  • 3+ years commissioning experience
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) Credentials
  • USGBC’s LEED™ AP Accreditation
  • Illinois Professional Engineer (PE) License
